Here are some words and phrases you may want to know in the dojo.

BASIC KATA:

  Fukyugata Ichi, Fukyugata Ni, Fukyugata San, Pinan Kata (1-5), Naihanchi Kata (1-3), 

ADVANCED KATA:

  Ananku, Wankan, Rohai, Wanshu, Passai, Gojushiho, Chinto, Kusanku

RANKS:

Shiro obi  white belt  
Ro-kyu  one green tip  
Go-kyu  two green tips  
Yon-kyu  green belt  
San-kyu  brown tips  
Ni-kyu  brown belt 
Ik-kyu  black tips 
Sho-dan  black belt (first degree)

Ni-dan  black belt (second degree)

San-dan  black belt (third degree)

Yon-dan  black belt (fourth degree)

Go-dan  black belt (fifth degree)

Roku-dan  black belt (sixth degree)

Shichi-dan  black belt (seventh degree)

Hachi-dan  black belt (eighth degree)

NUMBERS: 

  Ichi  one (1) - abbreviated as ICH

  Sho  first (as in shodan)

  Ni  two (2)

  San  three (3)

  Shi  four (4)

  Yon  fourth (as in yondan)

  Go  five (5)

  Roku  six (6) - abbreviated as RO

  Shichi  seven (7) - abbreviated as SHI

  Hachi  eight (8) - abbreviated as HACH

  Ku  nine (9)

  Ju  ten (10)

GENERAL TERMINOLOGY: 

  Arigato  thank you

  Budo  martial art or way

  Bushido  the way of the warrior

  Compai  end of the year gathering

  Deshi  karate student (below black belt level)

  Dojo  training hall

  Doshokai  a meeting to generate discussion (often used to describe the end of the year
                 celebration when we sit in a circle, do kata, and make toasts to the new year)

  Dozo  please

  Fukyugata  basic

  Hajime  start 

  Hanshi  third and highest teaching title

  Karate  empty hand

  Karatedo  the Way of Karate

  Kiai  spirit continuing force or spirit; killing technique

  Kio-tsuke  attention - pronounced KET SKEH 

  Kyoshi  second teaching title

  Mawatte  turn

  Onegai-shimasu  please teach us

  Oyo-tan-ren  all basic techniques

  Pinan  intermediate

  Rei  bow

  Seiza  formal sitting position

  Sempai  senior

  Sensei  teacher San Dan or above

  Shihan  director

  Shinden  those who came before us

  Shinden-ni-rei  all bow to those who came before us

  Yoi  prepare or ready

  Yakusoku kumite  pre-arranged fighting

  Yame  stop or discontinue

  Waza  technique

  Mae-geri  front (toe-tip) kick

  Oi-zuki  chasing, lunge punch

  Shuto  knife hand

  Tsuki  punch

  Uke  block

  Uraken  back-fist

  Yoko-geri  side kick

WEAPONS:

  Bo  staff

  Kama  hand sickle

  Nunchaku  flail

  Sai  ancient weapon used for defense against sword attacks

  Tuifa (aka Tonfa)  millstone handle
